First week back with @coach.aaron in 7 weeks and it feels so good! I'm so unfit and weak after doing sweet f all during that time. Taking it easy rehabbing my core as I did have my muscles sewn back together, I had closed them as far as you can with workouts but it's impossible to 100% close them back to their former glory with exercise (which I don't think people realise) so my doctor thought we may as well do that while he was there. I still feel tender and my core is so much weaker at the moment, but I can't wait to see what we can do once it's fully healed. In 1991 a young woman set the literary world on fire with her surgical dissection of the media backlash against the gains of the feminist movement of the 70s. Earlier this week I got the opportunity to listen to #susanfaludi speak about her latest book #intothedarkroom an extraordinary biographical exploration of her father's gender reassignment and a family history under Nazi Occupation in Hungary. It asks the question if identity is something we choose or an inescapable inheritance. Faludi artfully juxtaposes the personal identity storyline against a backdrop of Hungarian national identity politics. It raises many interesting questions about identity but it also is a reminder of the dangers of attachment to a narrative, particularly when that narrative becomes a tool for a wider agenda. I have grappled with the idea of identity myself over the years with regards to mainstream media, initially in the role of the perceived victim, and then latterly as the puppeteer when I became a film agent responsible for the creation, direction and propagation of visual material. My general dissatisfaction with the way minority cultures were portrayed in mainstream media led to my involvement with documentary film-making where I thought I would be able to contribute to the discussion and play a small role in helping address an imbalance. It is still a discussion I'm very much interested in however as I approach my "zen years" I've realised that that an over-attachment to a personal or broader narrative can be a cause for much despair also, whichever side you are coming from. We are products of our #guna and #karma, This is an inescapable fact. The circle has been universally revered in ancient cultures for its sacred geometric symbolism. In Chinese culture, heaven is represented by a circle, whilst earth a square. A traditional dish served at the Chinese New Year reunion dinner is the red-stained boiled egg in its shell; the egg signifying continuity, the circle of life and rebirth. The yin-yang symbol which expresses both masculine and feminine energy in balance is also represented by a circle. Similarly Jung saw the circle as being symbolic of the mind, whilst the square, the body. As is the case with heaven and earth in Chinese wisdom, when these two shapes being the circle and square come together, it represents a union in balance. Yogic postures that embody energetic alignment release energy currents that transcend the superficiality of physical shapes.
